Wind has paid a major part in the life of Fuertevetura for centuries, perhaps unjustly giving it the nickname of "the windy island".   It has powered the many windmills the ruins of which can be seen throughout the island - in towns and countryside alike.   Nowadays it is the wind turbine which harvests the wind to produce power.
